Commandments

We know there are 10 commandments. But do we really?

Exodus 20:2-17; Deuteronomy 5:6-21

In RCIA, we learned the 10 are (quoting Dt,GNB)

  1. Worship no god but me.
  2. Do not use my name for evil purposes.
  3. Observe the Sabbath and keep it holy.
  4. Respect your father and your mother.
  5. Do not commit murder.
  6. Do not commit adultery.
  7. Do not steal.
  8. Do not accuse anyone falsely.
  9. Do not desire another man's wife
  10. .. do not desire his house ++
It seems like the Teachers are conveniently missing out Dt 5:8-9 (Do not make for yourselves images of anything in heaven or on earth or in the water under the earth

Stepping into any Catholic Church, you'll be welcomed by statues of Mother Mary, Jesus Christ and always the Crucifix hung right in the middle of the hall.

I used to feel a sense of frustration as Jesus has already sacrificed his body and died for us. Why are we still putting him in torture by having such a statue?

Yet, after ~1 year of attending mass in a Catholic Church, I see the point is for us to REMEMBER the sacrifice. Many a times when the Eucharist is offered, I find myself in tears REMEMBERING Jesus and the plot of this eternal story we're all in.

Also, if indeed Dt 5:8-9 was valid, we'll be missing out on so much Man can do - Van Gogh and his starry nights, Johannes Vermeer and the girl, even Leonardo and Mona Lisa.

At this point, we haven't completed all 10 commandments but I was taught that the first 3 is spiritual and the rest (?) are of flesh.

Fun fact: in Matthew 19:18-19, Jesus summarised the "commandments" for the Rich Young Man: 5,6,7,8,4 and the rest (1,2,3,9,10) were evolved to "love thy neighbour as you love yourself".

Does it mean that in the new covenant, there are but these 6 commandments?

Idk I'm just penning down my thoughts so I can gracefully ask the Teachers on this matter..
